Crossland Road Rail Crossing Upgrade
Crossland Road Rail Crossing Upgrade
Location: Gordonvale, Far North Queensland
Client: MSF Sugar

Project Overview:
Stratos Civil delivered the civil works package for the Crossland Road Rail Crossing upgrade on behalf of MSF Sugar. The project required careful staging around live operations, installation of new conduits, construction of a reinforced concrete rail crossing and reinstatement of the road approaches. Strict erosion and sediment controls were implemented throughout to protect surrounding farmland and waterways.

Scope of Works:
Erosion and sediment control implementation
Construction of a detour access track to maintain traffic flow
Installation of new electrical and communications conduits
Excavation of existing crossing and preparation of subgrade
Formwork, placement of reinforcement steel and rail alignment
Concrete pour and finishing for new rail crossing slab
Asphalt pavement tie-in works on both sides of the new crossing
Challenges & Solutions:
Working adjacent to live rail infrastructure
→ Coordinated shutdown windows and adhered to strict rail safety protocols.
Ensuring continuous local access
→ Constructed a temporary detour track to maintain safe public movement.
High rainfall environment
→ Erosion controls, bunding and silt protection implemented before excavation.

Project Outcome:
The upgraded rail crossing was delivered safely and in accordance with MSF Sugar’s engineering requirements. The new concrete rail slab provides a durable, long-life crossing, while asphalt tie-ins ensure smooth transitions for vehicles. The works improved operational reliability and transport access throughout the harvest season.
